Here are a list of some of my favourite wedding venues, especially the places we’ve been often. We’ve been to most of the venues in Wellington and many in the Wairarapa, there are just too many great venues to list them all!
One thing that’s common to most venues is if you’re at or near their advertised capacity you’re often left with little room to move. The smaller venues suffer from this more than the larger venues.
Few venues in Wellington offer great wet weather options for photos. I can talk with couples about some of my favourite locations for photos in case of wet weather.
Ohariu Farm, The Woolshed
Ohariu Farm is the venue we’ve been to most, and is definitely one of our favourites. It’s a large purpose built wedding venue in the Ohariu Valley, about twenty minutes drive from central Wellington, set on a working farm. Ohariu has friendly staff, great food, and on a nice day there are lots of great locations for photos.
Boomrock is a fantastic boutique venue out in the Ohariu Valley, about twenty five minutes drive from central Wellington. It’s set on a working farm on the west coast, about 200 meters above sea level, with lots of locations for photos on a nice day, and stunning sunsets in the evening. The staff are friendly, the food’s great, and it’s a really fun place for a wedding. Tim (the owner of Wild Photography) had his wedding at Boomrock in 2014 🙂
The Boatshed is a great venue on the Wellington waterfront, with a fantastic view of the harbour, lagoon, and city. It’s lovely inside, and has been recently renovated, modernising it and adding an elevator. In summer the outside deck is fantastic for mingling and for group photos. One of the big advantages of the boat shed is you’re free to bring in your own caterer and drinks, making it a reasonably priced option.
The Rowing Club
The Rowing Club sits beside the Boatshed on the Wellington waterfront, and has the same advantages. It’s a little smaller than the boat shed, but is still a lovely venue.
Brackenridge is a fantastic venue just outside Martinborough in the Wairarapa. They have plenty of luxury accommodation for guests in units or cottages situated around the grounds, as well as a spa for the girls to have their hair and make-up done. The venue itself is lovely, with indoor and outdoor options for ceremonies, and there’s lots of space. There are plenty of locations for photos on the grounds and in the area.
Murdoch James is a lovely vineyard just outside Martinborough. Vineyard weddings are always fun and relaxed, and photos among the vines are just amazing. They have a restaurant on-site that serves great food and their own great wines, and there are lots of locations for photos around the grounds.
Old St Pauls
Old St Pauls is probably the most popular ceremony location in Wellington – Tim had his wedding ceremony there! It’s a beautiful old church in central Wellington, they’re very well organised and used to weddings. Old St Pauls comes highly recommended.
